Canadian Design | Philip Sparks

Posted by Oak and Oar on May 12, 2011

As I begin to plan out my summer I came to the realization that I am going to have to get my grown up on for a handful of formal events where my weathered 3sixteen ST 100x’s won’t make the cut. So this week the hunt for some new duds began. First stop was to check out what our good friends at 3sixteen were offering up. Definitely some goods there to be had, especially if you’re looking to revamp and revitalize your denim game or if you just want to accessorize your existing get up. Trust me if you need a new tie and some leather goods, no need to look any further.

As I sat motionless at the keyboard trying to conjure up some brands I must have subconsciously been shuffling through the old brain rolodex as I recalled seeing a brand at Capsule in Las Vegas. I didn’t know much about the brand but did recall the name: Philip Sparks. Turns out Philip Sparks Tailored Goods Inc. is a Canadian Men’s and Women’s label based out of Toronto, Ontario. The collection launched in 2007 and has since successfully meshed nostalgic vintage with classic styling for contemporary everyday sensibilities.

Designer Philip Sparks developed an interest in heritage tailoring in the design departments of the Canadian Opera Company, the National Ballet of Canada and the Start-ford Festival. Initially focusing on men’s wear the designer branched out introducing a 30 piece women’s collection for Spring of this year. Sparks draws inspiration for his collections from found photographs, Canada’s great outdoors and vintage fabrics, hardware and notions.

This top left styling really caught my attention and as soon as I can afford it I’ll be in it trying to look that sharp.
All articles of clothing and accessories that comprise the collection are proudly manufactured and designed in Canada by specialized manufacturers, leather workers and knitters. Sounds like a win win.
