EVERYDAY CARRY | D. CALEN KNAUF

Posted by Oak and Oar on May 26, 2011

I first came across Calen Knauf’s work over at Vancouver Is Awesome. From then on I would say I frequented his site on the regular keeping current on his design endeavours.

Knauf has become a bit of a fixture in the Canadian apparel design scene. Living and studying at Emily Carr and pursuing Industrial Design in East Vancouver, Knauf already has an extremely impressive roster of clientele. Working with the likes of Adidas, Color Magazine, Nike 6.0, Oakley, Quiksilver, Stussy, Underworld Vancouver and Westbeach Clothing, the enthusiast of tripe soup with rice noodles, smooth ground, skateboarding, white t-shirts, camping and straight razor shaves continues to impress. Ever wonder who was behind the Stussy Canada logo…yup, this guy.

Graicously taking some time between his monthly work for Adidas, the revamping of the Bonita website, his studies and his furniture projects Calen took some time to shoot us a snapshot of his Everyday essentials. Enjoy.

Persol 649′s (finally learned my lesson, 3rd pair in 2 years to last longer than a month, were talkin 5 months and countin!)

Keys

Lamy inkwell

Waterproof, smash proof camera (mandatory features in a camera for me)

Clebar self winding watch, (my late great uncle Tommy’s)

SRM knife (5 dollar knife, I stopped carrying $200 blades after loosing 2 identical knives in 1 month)

Leather envelope wallet (I made a few for friends 3 years ago and was gonna follow up with a leather “plastic shopping bag”, but the blogosphere has revealed that I slept on that idea)

Clairefontaine notebook (French paper or bust)

Lamy CP1 (worlds most perfect pen, got a second one in the mail today!)

Business card

Samsung P300 (this phone came out in like 2002ish, Ive had 3 and they’re hard to find now, I just broke my screen and took it apart and put in a new one just the other day. love this phone)

B3 Italia Bobby trolley, Joe Colombo (growing up, my dad [also a designer] had one of these that he kept all his pens and shit in, I loved it and bought one several years ago and have reached into it everyday since then)

I strongly suggest keeping your eye on this kid. Check out some of his work: work and stop by First To The Top. Or if you just want to watch some skating check out his Skate Sundays.
