Fall/Winter 2012 | The Life After Midnight

Posted on November 16, 2012 by Oak and Oar

The first week of December will mark the release of our second collection entitled ‘The Life After Midnight’. I have had a lot of people asking about the theme and collection so I thought I would shed a bit of light on our Fall/Winter project. The Life After Midnight on the surface is quiet simple. When friends are gathered together at the lake the hours between midnight and the early am are the time when the true colours come out and the time when the best stories are created. The ones that get told year after year and snowball into exaggerated recounts of that evening. Unless they are the ones that feature Kelso, those might sound exaggerated but those ones are true. Whether they are true or grossly exaggerated they never cease to bring a huge grin to your face. For me personally The Life After Midnight transcends beers, poker, bonfires and exaggerated stories. After the midnight hour is when the creative juices, for me at least, seem to flow. Maybe it’s in part to the lack of sleep that I begin to think outside of the box or maybe it is when the world is a sleep and I am in a distraction free setting that things just seem to click. Whatever it is I can credit it with probably 90% of the fall collection. The first time I tossed around the idea came in 2008 while working on a University thesis on streetwear and urban branding. I had snaked my way into a meeting with   Bobby and Ben Hundreds and generously granted time with Benny Gold to ask a few questions and engage in a conversation on street wear, design and music. How does this relate to ‘The Life After Midnight’ and not just a glorified example of name dropping? … Continue reading →

WANDERING THE WHITESHELL | THE CUB

Posted on February 24, 2012 by Oak and Oar

It seems that the bear population have decided to come out of hibernation a bit earlier this year. The lack of snow has been a key reason for the early rise and many experts are predicting that this lack of snow could contribute to more run-ins this summer in cabin country. When you think about it is kind of crazy considering we had an abnormal amount of action last summer due to dry conditions. Today this little gal was snagged up in the Whiteshell and will be the first patient housed at The International Polar Bear Conservation Centre at the Assiniboine Park Zoo, part of the $200 million redevelopment plan at the zoo. The female year old was found in cottage country in good health but malnourished. “The focus of the IPBCC is and always will be polar bears,” said Tim Sinclair-Smith, director of zoological operations for the zoo. “This was a special request by Manitoba Conservation and we’re happy to help. The arrival of the cub also gives us a great opportunity for a trial run of the facility for when the first polar bear cub comes our way.” (via)
