CANADA DAY | THE FLAG

Posted on June 27, 2012 by Oak and Oar

Ever wanted a big ole Canada flag for the cottage but didn’t feel like dropping a bag of cash on it? Did you know that you can get on a waiting list for a Canadian flag that has flown on Parliament Hill? Basically you can send in a written request with your name, complete home address and telephone number to the Office of the Minister and take a stab at getting your hands on some of that red and white nylon. Each day a new Canadian flag is flown from the Peace Tower and East and West Block. Government policy is to make these flags available, one to each household, as they are paid for by Canadian taxpayers. You can make a request for either the Peace Tower flag, which measures 7.5 ft x 15 ft and would required a 45 ft to 50 ft flag pole or go for something a bit smaller and wait on the East or West Block flag, which is 4.5 ft x 9 ft and requires a 30 ft to 35 ft pole. The only thing is you’ll probably be 60 when you finally move up the list to the top. The Peace Tower flag has a waiting list of 35 years and the East or West Block a mere 23 years. North Star | Classic Canadian Sportswear

Posted on September 7, 2011 by Chris

Over the last few years we have witness the resurgence of some classic brands. One of which that can trace its roots back to Batawa, Ontario. Canadian brand North Star Sportswear was originally founded by the Bata Corporation in the late 1940′s, reaching its pinnacle in popularity in the 1970s – 1980s, when the sportswear movement was at its peak. From there it sat dormant for 20 years, shelved, until it was relaunched in April of last year by Toronto designer Adrian Aitcheson (Too Black Guys) and Arcade Agency’s creative director Pablo Mozo (Though the names might not ring a bell if you google the Team Canada apparel from the 2010 Winter Olympics you will see the mastery of collaborative efforts). Hitting the ground running, the brand re-issued a few classics for their Summer 2010 collection that consisted of tributes to the bright colors of the 1970s-80s. The current Fall/Winter collection continues to pay homage to the iconic history, meshing the sportswear roots with the essences of today’s style-savvy consumers.  The duo’s background and history of successful collaboration is sure to make the next few years of the brands revival very interesting.  I would venture I guess that this brand will only continue on the path of success.
