Fall/Winter 2012 | The Life After Midnight

Posted on November 16, 2012 by Oak and Oar

The first week of December will mark the release of our second collection entitled ‘The Life After Midnight’. I have had a lot of people asking about the theme and collection so I thought I would shed a bit of light on our Fall/Winter project. The Life After Midnight on the surface is quiet simple. When friends are gathered together at the lake the hours between midnight and the early am are the time when the true colours come out and the time when the best stories are created. The ones that get told year after year and snowball into exaggerated recounts of that evening. Unless they are the ones that feature Kelso, those might sound exaggerated but those ones are true. Whether they are true or grossly exaggerated they never cease to bring a huge grin to your face. For me personally The Life After Midnight transcends beers, poker, bonfires and exaggerated stories. After the midnight hour is when the creative juices, for me at least, seem to flow. Maybe it’s in part to the lack of sleep that I begin to think outside of the box or maybe it is when the world is a sleep and I am in a distraction free setting that things just seem to click. Whatever it is I can credit it with probably 90% of the fall collection. The first time I tossed around the idea came in 2008 while working on a University thesis on streetwear and urban branding. I had snaked my way into a meeting with   Bobby and Ben Hundreds and generously granted time with Benny Gold to ask a few questions and engage in a conversation on street wear, design and music. How does this relate to ‘The Life After Midnight’ and not just a glorified example of name dropping? … Continue reading →

HANDKERCHIEF | THE INSPIRATION

Posted on May 15, 2012 by Oak and Oar

There are quite a few things I remember about gramps growing up. He started everyday off with oatmeal after his morning trek to collect eggs. He had a red truck, that in the early days was littered with Skoal containers. Later on he dropped the habit and drove a big brown F150 with some hideous orange pin-striping. Though his truck didn’t always look good, he did. Gramps was always looking proper in a long sleeve button-up. It didn’t matter the weather chances are you would find him a long sleeve, what was the toss up was whether it was flannel or not. I’d venture a guess that 8 our of 12 months it was flannel unless he was putting in time on the golf course. But what I recall most is the staple handkerchief he had in his pocket at all times. He didn’t match it to his shirt or undertake any special morning fold. It sat there with the intentions of being used. It sat scrunched up either under the flap of his breast pocket or in the back pocket along side his pocket watch which he monitored regularly. He put these things through the ringer each day wiping grease from his hands or picking up that runny nose after a morning out ice fishing. For him it was a practical necessity for his day to day activities. This had a lasting impression on me and was the inspiration behind the Oakman, Chinook and Dominion handkerchiefs.

ORDERS | PICK IT UP

Posted on May 13, 2012 by Oak and Oar

We’ll I managed to get through the first round of orders. To those who went out of there way to purchase some Oak + Oar this week, thank you. When I was devising the plan I wanted to ensure that each order was packed with a little something. Something small but tangible. I considered stickers but that didn’t feel right. It needed to be something a little more practical. The end result was a guitar pick. Maybe you play, maybe you don’t, but I thought what better to have on hand for the weekend getaway to the cottage than a guitar pick. They come in an array of colours and gauges from 0.81mm to 0.96mm. I’m thinking that somewhere down the line it will come in handy for that bonfire sing along. And if you really love them that much but can’t justify putting 20 shirts then you can pick up these. And when you do pick up that guitar around the fire for a little sing-a-long ensure you have your camera on hand so that you can enter the first annual Cabin Life Photo Contest.

LOOKBOOK VIDEO | SUMMER LOITERING

Posted on May 7, 2012 by Oak and Oar

We were going to wait until well into summer, once everything had greened up and there was some activity out on the water to shoot our Summer lookbook but we didn’t want to eat up any of those previous weekends hovering over a computer editing. That and we couldn’t resist getting out there a few weeks early to get a jump on some warm weather. Spending our time crowding over the BBQ, rifiling some of those useless ProStaffs into no mans land and having a couple drinks we put together a collections of photos and a video featuring our inaugural collection entitled Summer Loitering. Shout outs to Cam at Nice! Productions for handling the filming and editing. The crew, Cal, Eric and Winnipeg’s favourite rapper Saint Kris for getting their model on. Also let’s not forget talented hometown boys, Royal Canoe, for allowing us the chance to set the visuals to their track Caught In A Loop off their most recent EP. The boys are currently touring Canada and making a stop at our old stomping grounds in New York on Wednesday. May 9 – New York @ Pianos May 10 – Washington DC @ The Velvet Lounge May 12 – Detroit @ Garden Bowl May 13 – Chicago @ Township May 14 – Minneapolis @ Triple Rock Social Club May 18 – Regina @ O’Hanlon’s May 19 – Saskatoon @ Amigo’s May 22 – Vancouver @ The Waldorf May 23 – Kelowna @ Habitat May 25 – Calgary @ Palomino Social Club May 26 – Edmonton @ Pawn Shop

PREVIEW | T-SHIRTS

Posted on May 5, 2012 by Oak and Oar

And now for the meat and potatoes of our Summer 2012 collection, the t-shirts. Each of our tee’s are limited to 70 pieces. When they’re gone, they’re gone. The fit on these are dialed and we will break down what size is best for you next week in our lookbook photo post and video post (Body Width: S=18″, M=20.5″, L=22″, XL=24″). The tees are proudly printed in Canada on the West Coast, printed inner labels to prevent the irritating feel of woven neck labels and our damask woven labels on the bottom hem (made in Montreal). The tees are 6 oz. 100% cotton tubular preshrunk jersey. $1 from the purchase of each tee will be donated to the Masigcine Children’s Home in South Africa. First up is the tee that inspired the collection. Our Summer Loitering tee is offered in two colorways both a navy and a white. Next up is the Oak + Oar Signature tee. First up is the black on black which is one of our personal favourites. The Signature tee is also offered in a heather grey tee. After that you have the Motto tee. Though a little different than Drake’s motto, definitely don’t have a condo up in Biscayne nor am I 25 sitting on 25 mil. But my team good, we don’t really need a mascot. Anyways none of that is relevant to this. The motto tee features our slogan “Render Your Art, Not Your Diamonds”, the phrase that is woven on the backside of each of our woven labels. The tee is available in a lime and white on black and greys on white. The Open Season tee was one of the first tees in the collection. The same design that is featured on the front of our Good Wood piece is available on … Continue reading →
