With his new album, Flying Colours, coming down the pipeline, Shad has released a little snippet entitled ‘Peace’. Peace will not appear on the full length follow-up to TSOL but sheds light on the direction of the album. Inspiration for ‘Flying Colours’ include, “Kyle Mooney, Kanye West, Kendrick Lamar, Eli Stone, Queen/Spadina, Grandview Calvary Baptist Church, my friends, my family, 30 Rock, We Are the City, Tolstoy, good weather, and the idea that trying is worth it even if you fail.” What more can you ask for… “I thought I would share this rough mix of a new song (that wont be on the album) with you called “Peace”. It’s part of a group of new tracks I’ve been working on since April, and it sort of explains a bit of where my thinking arrived after working through so much in the process of recording the full-length. Some thoughts on the challenge of living peacefully in a violent world, of having hope and having fun in a world where it’s easy to despair, and accepting our own successes and failures and making some kind of peace with ourselves.” Via SHADK
A couple really great visuals by Winnipeg based film makers Christopher Paetkau and Trevor Adam Gill. BIKE! from Trevor Adam Gill on Vimeo. Greetings From Churchill from Christopher Paetkau on Vimeo.
Film maker Quinn Merkeley set out on a documentary here in Manitoba featuring the Landlock Surf Crew. The Manitoba based crew, consisting of Tom Stimson, Colin Fuchs, Stephen Carroll and Will Bergmann (whom for the record allowed us the use of his barn to shoot our first Homegrown video with Del Barber), have spent years, not only perfecting the art of lake surfing, but hunting for the ideal surf location on Lake Manitoba that today is only referred to as location X. I would love to know the amount of miles these guys have put on their cars pursuing their passion. The hunt for location X begins. _________________ Quinn Merkeley is a graduate of the Canadian Film Centre’s Directors’ Lab and the National Screen Institute’s Totally Televisino program. He studied filmmaking directly under Ron Howard through all phases of production on the Universal Studio’s feature, Cinderella Man. On top of that he has four feature film scripts and numerous television series currently optioned. (via. NiceProductions)

The first week of December will mark the release of our second collection entitled ‘The Life After Midnight’. I have had a lot of people asking about the theme and collection so I thought I would shed a bit of light on our Fall/Winter project. The Life After Midnight on the surface is quiet simple. When friends are gathered together at the lake the hours between midnight and the early am are the time when the true colours come out and the time when the best stories are created. The ones that get told year after year and snowball into exaggerated recounts of that evening. Unless they are the ones that feature Kelso, those might sound exaggerated but those ones are true. Whether they are true or grossly exaggerated they never cease to bring a huge grin to your face. For me personally The Life After Midnight transcends beers, poker, bonfires and exaggerated stories. After the midnight hour is when the creative juices, for me at least, seem to flow. Maybe it’s in part to the lack of sleep that I begin to think outside of the box or maybe it is when the world is a sleep and I am in a distraction free setting that things just seem to click. Whatever it is I can credit it with probably 90% of the fall collection. The first time I tossed around the idea came in 2008 while working on a University thesis on streetwear and urban branding. I had snaked my way into a meeting with Bobby and Ben Hundreds and generously granted time with Benny Gold to ask a few questions and engage in a conversation on street wear, design and music. How does this relate to ‘The Life After Midnight’ and not just a glorified example of name dropping? … Continue reading
Our homie Cam (Nice! Productions) released his latest music video project this week with homegrown talent Demetra. Demetra is a Winnipeg based songwriter, painter, filmmaker, yoga instructor and globetrotter. “Her debut album, Lone Migration, was formed through her polar experiences – a musical trial by tundra – and brought to light with the recording prowess of Royal Canoe’s Matt Peters”. The video was shot out at Fort Whyte with emphasis being placed on simplicity, natural beauty, and landscapes. Above is the visuals to accompany a very enjoyable listen. We took a week away from the city and took off in search of sun and water. It was a bit of a trip and I found myself in front of a WestJet inflight monitor watching a combination of the Women’s Canada/USA soccer semi-final – which was likely the worst display of officiating I have every seen in a professional sports game. That Gold Medal will always have an astericks beside it for me (*). When the states got their penalty kick I had to switch over to beach volleyball to cool my jets and to stop my lady from getting us air marshalled off the flight. I love watching beach volleyball, mens or women’s, I don’t care. It still remains one of my favourite Olympic sports and the one I wish I could play at that level. As I watched, I was remind of American beach volleyball stud Karch Kiraly. He always played in that fluorescent pink hat with the brim flipped up that either sported his last name or Speedo on the under brim. That got me thinking to the days of the flourescent Zinc Oxide nose block that surfaced during the 1980′s. I was curious as to if that was still around. Random enough the next day I walked into a surf shop and found the original OG Zinka. Memories flooded back of those photos of skiers, lifeguards and beach goers alike who would use the colourful nose block as a facial accessory while blocking out the UV rays. Zinka is still the best stuff out there. It is water-resistant making it a staple for the lake and beach. It is \o7 complete \f7 sun block meaning no light gets through it and you rarely need to re-apply. Sure if you are out in the sun long … Continue reading
