THE WEEKEND DUMP

Posted on June 20, 2011 by Oak and Oar

The cabin was pretty low key this weekend. Putting in time handling some yard work, brushing up on my ping pong game and putting a couple miles on the bike which I haven’t done in four or five years. Driving out to the cottage with the windows down and the BombĂ© and Mr. Caribbean mash-up of James Blake and Drake on play. On the final stretch had the windows down taking in the sounds. There had to be few thousands frogs blasting their vocals in the beaver flooded landscape. As you can likely tell I am going through a stage of obsession for anything with texture. This an old dock rope. Remnants of an afternoon rain shower. Massive moths. Crackling bonfires. And steaming hot tubs. Until next weekend.

THE WEEKEND DUMP

This weekend we hit Eagle’s Nest Lodge for some fishing. This is about the 14th year we have done this as it has spiraled into a annual event. Past years we have brought in bundles of fish, 60-70 a piece for a two days worth of fishing. This year proved to be a bit slower but still another great year. Friday night we spent a lot of time ripping from spot to spot with minimal luck. So I brushed up on my history while snapping photos of my feet (which have Canadian Coloda Booster Juice stains on them – highly recommend). Eagle’s Nest was built on the foundation of a North West Trading post site that was built over 300 years ago. In fact the owners have combed the property and found coins dating back to the 1800′s. The Winnipeg River is the largest (by volume) flowing river in the world and it was a major route for early explorers. The dock at home base. Saturday we caught a few fish. Enough for a shore lunch at least. I am not big of fish but something about the outdoors, cooked over an open fire makes it ten times more enjoyable. And for the record my Pickerel were too large to keep. When you’re not catching fish you get photos like this. And this. Would have had more if this stupid Nikon point and shoot worked. When all was said and done I still managed to walk away with 1 of 4 cash prizes – Largest Walleye. Guess we will have to put it towards that speeding ticket. Until next year.

THE WEEKEND DUMP

I didn’t make it to the cabin this weekend. Instead… Prior to the U2 show, which featured opening act The Fray, the band educated us on a few wordly facts that ran the 360 degree retractable screen. Two of which I took note of. The first, there are over 3,422,411 blog posts made daily and the second over $157,820,279,633 has been spent on illegal drugs this year. Three jets flew the stadium prior to U2 taking the stage. Foreshadowing Tuesday Winnipeg Jet announcement? I think using the word epic is over used but in the case of the U2 360 stage, it was epic. You know when you have 6 guys dangling in little chairs from the top of the stage canopy with video cameras you can use the word epic. There were easily 50 flat bed semi’s in the parking lot along with over 30 tour buses. Look for the DVD soon. Bono circa “Beautiful Day”. The Edge. Bono circa “Elevation”. You’ll probably recognize 80% off these guys as The Fray, the additional fella is our Minneapolis homie Marty. The Fray are currently on tour with U2 opening for the 360 Tour. The band is half way through recording their third studio album with producer Brendan O’Brien in Nashville, which should come out late this year or early 2012. They performed a few tracks off the upcoming album and it sounds pretty great. Thanks to Ben and the guys for the hook up and Marty for bringing us along. On a side not, if you are in the market for a one off custom longboard you should check out his little side project called Fat Fish. Cheers

THE WEEKEND DUMP

The camera made it’s way out of the bag for about 30 minutes on Monday to snap a couple product photos for the online store (which should be stocked and up and running in the next month or so). After doing some yard work and before heading home I piled up the trailer to make a dump run – camera in tow. This Baycrest boat was at the dump. Baycrest, as in manufactured by the Hudson’s Bay Company. The department store. Calm. Not always, but sometimes calm. Took the dog for a stroll in the woods last weekend and this was along the trail. Yup just a leg. Would love to know the story that goes with this one. And a food post, if you can call it that, for good measure. Corn Pops, a cabin essential.
